The Riviera Maya has so many great attractions that it’s hard to decide what to do first. Perhaps you’ll head to the beach, go shopping or head out on a nearby excursion. But if you like to snorkel or dive, we’ve compiled some of the top reasons you should hit the water at Riviera Maya.
The Mesoamerican Reef – The largest coral reef in the Northern Hemisphere and the second longest in the world, this reef runs parallel to the beaches of Playa del Carmen. In calm, cloudless conditions, divers can access the reefs of the Riviera Maya from over 20 different dive locations.
Night and Day – Come back at night to view a variety of fish and other creatures active only after dark. Bring flashlights so you can enjoy a wide range of beautiful coral colors you can’t see during the day.
Sharks! – Just like people, Bull sharks enjoy the Riviera Maya from November through March. If you’ve ever considered being present at a shark feed, you’re in luck. Bull sharks are located only five minutes away by boat from Playa del Carmen.
Rare Creatures – From May through September, enormous whale sharks breed off the northern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula. Meanwhile, endangered Green and Loggerhead sea turtles will begin to lay their eggs along the coast.
Caves & Cenotes – Divers come from all over the world can enjoy the experience of diving in the flooded caves and underground rivers of the Yucatan Peninsula. Divers with proper Open Water certification can be accompanied by a certified Cenotes Dive Guide and travel up to 200 feet in a magnificent cave system.
