In Mayan culture, pyramids served multiple purposes. They were used to worship gods and bury kings. The bottoms of the pyramids held the burial chambers of revered leaders and often housed a complex network of rooms and chambers. The pyramid tops were dedicated for worship and included altars for ritual sacrifice.
These temples often formed the center of public life. Nohoch Mul is a stunning example of the Mayan pyramids, and you can experience it first-hand when you take the Cobá Maya Encounter.
