One of the biggest draws in Mexico is without a doubt the iconic Chichen Itza, the remains of a big Maya city. Impressive enough as it is, only twice a year you can witness a truly awe-inspiring event.
When you bring together two visionary men and some drinks in a bar, really good things can result. Like Playa Palms Beach Hotel.
Picture the mid nineties in Playa del Carmen. The town, just a sleepy fishing village, was very different from the tourist destination it is today. The setting is the already mentioned bar. Entering the scene Rick who had, for a long while, a dream of building a condominium property on the beach.
At the bar he meets a vacationing Canadian architect. They get into a conversation, and the Canadian is instantly inspired by Rick’s idea. He starts drawing the concept for the building on a napkin… And Playa Palms Beach Hotel was conceived, under the name Blue Parrot. Rick being the original owner.
Of course you don’t build a property over night, especially one which requires a very special design. The intricate curved architecture with large cantilevering proved to be a real challenge to the work force which was in Playa del Carmen at the time. There were no big construction companies around and the few local contractors were more familiar with traditional square structures.
There were so many obstacles to face and they hit rock bottom when they ran out of funds. It seemed the project was in jeopardy of being scuttled. But the development team and the owners stuck together and after four long, exhausting years, the construction was finally completed.
What started on a napkin became reality in 1999: Playa Palms Beach Hotel was born! Known as Cielo Tropical, or Blue Parrot, it was was one of the first condo hotels in Playa del Carmen.
However, in 2007 the decision was made to hire a separate management company to operate the property under a new name: Playa Palms Beach Hotel.
This change required several remodelings. An on-site front desk operation was implemented to provide a better customer service, and the infrastructure was updated. The most important of these included soundproofing the windows and doors to ensure a quiet environment, essential since Playa Palms Beach Hotel is located in the very heart of the city of Playa del Carmen. Another change was the development of a breakfast kitchen. Our wonderful waiters now serve our guests a complimentary breakfast each morning.
To this very day, Playa Palms Beach Hotel is privately owned as a condominium property with almost all of the original buyers. Most of the owners visit regularly and take great pride in keeping their property in the best possible shape. We continuously improve the hotel to provide the best possible physical space and customer service.
We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our guests who have visited us over the years, and those who honor us even more by returning many times. It’s a pleasure having you at Playa Palms Beach Hotel!
We’re already looking forward to celebrate our next birthday with you, when Playa Palms Beach Hotel becomes legally an adult – celebrating its 18th birthday. Come celebrate with us and “wake up inside your dream”!
