When traveling to Mexico, many people worry about the safety in Playa del Carmen. But lately, it has gained a bad reputation and people are worried if it is still safe to travel here. Here is everything you need to know so you can enjoy your vacation in Playa del Carmen without worrying.
On account of sensational news coverage, people visiting Mexico expect drug wars and crime. We can assure you, that is not what awaits you in Playa del Carmen at all. People who live or have traveled here will most certainly tell you that they felt entirely safe in Playa del Carmen. The Riviera Maya in general, with its big resorts and many tourists visiting, is free of most dangers. Of course, as in many destinations, there are areas to avoid. But they are far away from the tourist area. But, without exaggerating, Playa del Carmen is safer than most North American cities. Simply use your common sense – just as you do at home.
Earlier this year, the safety in Playa del Carmen has been in the news because of the travel warning the U.S. government issued. The reason was an explosion on a ferry. As it turned out, it was an attempt at insurance fraud. By now, the security alert has been lifted. Sure, Playa del Carmen is a rapidly growing city, and, we won’t deny it, there is some crime. Just as in most big cities in the world. But it is never targeted at tourists.
What should I be aware of regarding the safety in Playa del Carmen?
What you should be aware of are pickpockets and being overcharged. Be aware of your belongings at all times and bring a bag that you can close. Regarding the overcharging, ask the staff at your hotel how much the taxi driver is supposed to charge for the destination you are heading to. If you want to go on excursions, be aware that on the 5th Avenue they tend to sell them overpriced. At Playa Palms Beach Hotel, our concierge or the front desk staff are happy to consult you on tours and book them for you at fair prices.
The nightlife in Playa del Carmen is considered safe. Apply the same safety precautions you would at home – don’t leave your drink unwatched and keep an eye on your belongings. If you are staying at Playa Palms Beach Hotel you don’t even have to worry about how to get there. The 12th street, where all the partying is going down, is just around the corner from us (but once inside the hotel, you don’t hear a bit).
Safety in Playa del Carmen at the beach
During the day, the beach is a very safe place to stay at. If you want to go to the beach at night, stay downtown, and make sure there are crowds close by. Otherwise, you might be an easy victim for robbery. At Playa Palms Beach Hotel, we have a night guard on the beach.
Safety in Playa del Carmen using public transportation
The public buses here are very safe to use. There are the ADO buses that bring you to the airport, to Tulum or to any other city in Mexico, and the smaller microbuses that bring you to places within the city. Also, the colectivos that run between Playa del Carmen and Cancun or Tulum are safe to use – once you get used to their driving style. Taxis are normally safe too, you might want to order a taxi with your hotel’s staff. At Playa Palms Beach Hotel we can help you arrange a transfer from the airport to the hotel and back. Just contact us at least 3 days prior to arrival.
Safety in Playa del Carmen while driving
If you don’t feel comfortable driving a car, Playa del Carmen is very easy to get around on foot or using taxis. Having that said, if you don’t leave bags or any belongings visible inside the car, it’s safe to park them on the street side. Be aware that some people here might drive a bit more careless than what you’re used to.
