With mother’s day right around the corner, we’re all about the moms. Find out why Luis’ mom threw a cake at him, why having the same voice as her mom got Martha in trouble and how Carmen’s mom suddenly turned into a tech geek.
Sometimes things that can’t be purchased really mean the most, like memories with our mom we hold close to our heart. And since laughing is healthy, here are some of Playa Palms Beach Hotel’s staff’s funniest memories with their moms:
Luis (Front Desk Manager)
“We celebrated my mom’s last birthday with all my siblings and their families at her place. Here in Mexico, we have a funny tradition called “la mordida”, which translates to “the bite”. It literally means that the celebrating person’s face is shoved into the cake for them to take the first bite, while everybody shouts “Mordida! Mordida!”. Of course, we planned to do exactly that with my mom. But when the moment came, after she blew out the candles, she grabbed the cake and started to throw pieces of it at us instead. We all ended up covered in cake and laughing a lot. She sure made this birthday unforgettable.”
“My mother and I share not only the same name but also have the same voice. So people used to mix us up on the phone all the time. One day, I was like 15 years old, my boyfriend called. We had plans to go watch a movie that night, but my mom didn’t know I had a boyfriend, so I just told her I would go to a friend’s place. When he called, she answered the phone and he, thinking she was me, asked her at what time the movie is and that he’s really looking forward to having some alone time with me. My mom just told him that the plans are canceled and I was grounded for a week. What I learned from it? I told future boyfriends to always make sure who they’re talking to…”
Carmen (Reservations Manager)
“My mom isn’t very interested in technology. She’s that kind of person that uses a phone to call people, not to read emails or take selfies. The day my son was born, I was with her and my husband. The latter was overly excited and utterly nervous. Naturally, he didn’t think of taking pictures of our son’s first minutes after he was born. My mom though found a camera we put in the things we packed for the hospital. It still remains a mystery to us how she did it, but she figured out not only how the camera works, but even the settings and everything. Thanks to her sudden technological revelation, we now have wonderful photos of my son after he was born.”
