Grocery shopping can be a fun way to discover a country you travel to. Also, all rooms at Playa Palms Beach Hotel feature a fully equipped kitchenette, for you to prepare your own meals and drinks – if you wish so. Here’s where you can get all the yummy ingredients you need.
About 7 blocks west from Playa Palms Beach Hotel is a big Walmart supermarket, where you can find basically everything you need. Groceries, toiletries, electronics (such as travel plugs!) and even clothing, souvenirs and sports articles like snorkels and they have a pharmacy too.
> On the 30th Avenue with 8th Street
Mega Comercial Mexicana
This Mexican chain is also about 7 blocks from us and like Walmart, Mega has a broad selection of nearly everything – but souvenirs.
> On the 30th Avenue with Constituyentes.
Oxxo, Circle K, 7 Eleven, Go Mart
These small 24 hours shops sell the most important things. Drinks, snacks, cigarettes, newspapers and magazines, a small selection of groceries and toiletries and sometimes you even find sunglasses and flip-flops.
> There really are many of these shops everywhere in Playa del Carmen. The closest to Playa Palms Beach Hotel is an Oxxo on the 1st Avenue between 12th and 10th Street.
If you want to buy organic products, fresh fruits, and vegetables, you best visit a market.
Just half a block from Mega, you find this market that’s famous among expats. Rather a small supermarket, they sell a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, organic products, typical Mexican goods plus even some toiletries, among them organic soaps. Plus they have a restaurant too, that serves delicious Mexican dishes and the yummiest juices.
> 30st Avenue between Constituyentes and 20st Street
Kava Kasa Market
Every Tuesday from 11 am to 1 pm, Kava Kasa Yoga Center hosts a market. You will find all sorts of organic and homemade products like bread, pastries or honey and of course fresh fruits and vegetables. It’s also a great place to meet people!
> 22th Street between 5th and 10th Avenue
Pretty much the same sellers from Kava Kasa Market are on Wednesdays from 1 to 3 pm at El Papalote market on 25th Avenue between Streets 30 and 32, and on Fridays from 9 to 11 am at Coco Beach (CTM with Flamingos).
Useful grocery shopping tips:
- Supermarkets are usually open every day from 7 am to 11 pm.
- Remember that you can only pay cash at the markets.
- Playa del Carmen has restricted alcohol sales hours. From Monday to Friday you can buy alcohol from 9 am to 10 pm, on Saturday from 9 am to 11 pm and on Sundays from 9 am to 5 pm. Schedules may vary a bit. In bars and restaurants, you can obviously get alcoholic drinks at any time.
- Taxis are available right outside or bigger supermarkets, but they charge you a bit more than the ones you stop on the street.
- Tip the people who bag your items, depending on how much groceries you bought, between 5 and 20 pesos.
