Traveling with children, in general, can be a challenge for parents. And long-haul flights have the potential for a special nightmare. But with the right preparations, it doesn’t have to be. And since we are happy to welcome families with kids to Playa Palms Beach Hotel, here are our top tips on how to keep your kids happy.
Charges and Flight Regulation About Flying with Children
One thing you want to thoroughly check before you even start your trip, are the rules of the airline you are traveling with. A different airline means different rules. Some don’t charge you for bringing a baby since they don’t need their own seat, while others charge you up to 75% your ticket price. In the latter case, you might as well buy an extra seat and enjoy the extra space.
At Playa Palms Beach Hotel, kids under 12 years old stay for free and we are happy to provide you with a crib if needed.
Bring your phone, tablet, DVD-player…. And download your kid’s favorite games, TV shows, and movies. Make sure all devices are fully charged when you start your journey, and to bring the charging cables.
Additionally, bring games like playing cards, a coloring book, books to read, toys… But since you don’t want to carry too much luggage, try and also think of easy games like I-Spy.
When flying with children it’s best to try and keep your offspring entertained with games and toys and to bring out the tablet only when you really need it. Also, make sure to have some tantrum-bursting items with you. A new game or movie you downloaded, fruit-scented crayons or a new toy can provide peace.
When traveling to Playa del Carmen, or anywhere in Mexico, make sure to bring a travel plug if needed. (More information here.)
Even on long-haul flights, don’t assume that the airline will provide all the meals and snacks you need. Bring extra snacks and treats for your kids and don’t forget to buy water and juice after you passed the security checkpoint.
Even though you might usually opt for healthy snacks for your children, now might be the moment you want to allow them to eat sweets. Usually, forbidden foods such as chocolates or donuts are the best bribery!
Probably the worst nightmare of any parent flying with children is that their toddler gets sick during the flight. But if you’re well prepared, you will handle even this situation with ease. Bring bandages, antiseptic cream, and medicine for upset stomachs.
Especially for smaller children, the cabin pressure sometimes causes them pain. Lollipops, a pacifier or anything else they can suck on is known to alleviate the pain. Also, special earplugs help a lot.
Be overly prepared
Bring enough wet wipes, Kleenex, and extra clothes – just in case. Keep in mind that when you are well prepared you will also be more relaxed, and kids pick up on that.
If you have a small pillow, bring it along too. Your child can sit on it to watch out of the window (what counts as entertainment too) and above all, they will sleep more comfortably and hence longer. And that’s definitely something you want!
