During your vacation at Playa Palms Beach Hotel, we strive to make your vacation in Playa del Carmen a memorable one. But as they say, you need to love yourself first to be able to love someone else – that applies to work too. Only because we truly love our jobs are we able to provide a service and an experience that you will love. Here’s what our staff likes most about their jobs and their favorite anecdotes:
Join the Playa Palms Beach Hotel team on a real Mayan adventure through the jungle and exploring an underground cenote.
We write a lot about things to do in and around Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya, and at Playa Palms Beach Hotel we help you find the tour that suits you best. To make sure we know what we talk about, we sometimes go on these tours ourselves. Last week, some of our staff went on a crazy jungle adventure with Amazing Caribbean Tours, to see if we can really recommend their tour to our guests. It was a lot of fun!
The friendly driver dropped us off at the ranch in the middle of the jungle somewhere between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Our guides, Rafael and Alex, were already waiting for us. After safety instructions, Rafael explained us the how-tos of ATV motorcycle driving. Not that there is much to explain, it has a thumb-accelerator and hand brakes, making them very easy to operate. You can drive them from the age of 16 up and don’t need a driver’s license. Then we finally started the engines and hit the rocky road.
Alex led our small group, with me behind him, since I’m the one with nearly no driving experience (having spent so much time playing Mario Kart turned out really useful at this point), and Rafael at the end. After starting slowly to allow us to practice, we then sped up a bit. Alex and Rafael would always make sure that we’re ok though – safety first. If driving an ATV is something you’ve never done before, you should definitely go for it. It was so much fun speeding through the jungle! You can ride the ATV motorcycles with up to 2 people, or you can choose a buggy instead, but only if you have the drivers license.
After about an hour of adrenaline rushing fun, we returned to the entrance, where a vehicle waited to bring us to the cenote “La Gloria”. This is a small but beautiful cenote, where you can cool off in its crystal clear waters, jump of a swing, snorkel, and swim. Make sure to bring bug spray though, there are many mosquitoes, and put it on as soon as you get out of the water.
Then we continued to the cenote Hilarios, a cenote in an underground cave. Climbing down the steep and narrow entrance, we already felt like true adventurers. Equipped with flashlights and life jackets, we started our tour through the cavern. Stalagmites and stalactites are everywhere, what makes this cenote a photographer’s dream. Rafael, while guiding us safely through what to us seemed a labyrinth, told us not only interesting facts but also Mayan legends and stories that made this a truly unforgettable and special experience. Let me remark here, that the cavern is certainly not for you if you’re claustrophobic (they ask you before). I would recommend bringing water shoes, since the ground is very rocky, and bug spray – at the entrance of the cave the mosquitoes are waiting.
In a resume, this for sure is one of the most fun ways to explore the amazing Riviera Maya’s nature. We especially liked that they take small groups or even private tours, which means you don’t have to waste time waiting and can truly enjoy every moment. You can either make all 3 activities or can choose 2 of them, and the tour takes about 4 hours.
Amazing Caribbean Tours also offers excursions to Sian Kaan, Holbox, and Isla Contoy. Just let us know if you’re interested in any of these tours at the best price.
The big family vacation you’ve probably been counting down for months is finally here! Sure you are excited to spend time with your family without worrying about being late for work, school duties or home chores. A family vacation is all about balance and it’s important for parents to also have time for yourselves. Here are some ideal activities for the whole family including the kids, “We Time”, and some perfect “Me Time” activities just for mum and dad.
We Time: Xel-ha
You will have just as much fun as your kids in the beautiful aquatic themed park, about 30 minutes from Playa del Carmen. Snorkel amongst colorful fish or in fresh cenotes, get your adrenaline pumped while flying on zip-lines over the jungle or discover native animals and plants under and above water. While your kids will love the Children’s World with a wading pool, water slide, rope climb, and other fun activities, exhausted parents can relax in the quiet hammock area.
Me Time: Catch
The roof top bar on the 12th Street between 5th and 10th Avenue, just a few steps from Playa Palms Beach Hotel, offers the most spectacular view over Playa del Carmen and the Caribbean Sea. Enjoy a gourmet dinner or just relax with a delicious drink or a glass of wine and take in the view.
We Time: Casa Sofia
Especially when traveling with toddlers, eating out can be a challenge. Not at the Italian Restaurant Casa Sofia on Avenida Aviacion close to the Paseo del Carmen mall, at the south end of the 5th Avenue. They serve delicious food (and what kid doesn’t like Spaghetti or Pizza?) and, most importantly, they have a huge play corner for children.
Me Time: Cirque du Soleil Joyà
The breathtaking visual spectacle takes you on a performance-packed journey in the mysterious Mayan jungle. Accompanied by a 3-course meal, this night also turns into a culinary experience. You can either opt for dinner and drinks or get an all-inclusive ticket to add Champagne and a seating close to the stage. Show times are from Tuesday to Thursday at 9 pm, and Friday and Saturday at 7 pm and 10:15 pm.
We Time: Captain Hook Pirate Show
Enjoy the most fun dinner cruise in Cancun, aboard a reproduction of a 18th-century Spanish galleon ship. This experience is tailored for children and adults alike, with a beautiful view of the Nichupté Lagoon shoreline, a delicious dinner, open bar, comedy, games, and music. While mum and dad enjoy dancing and a drink, the kids will have fun treasure hunting. The evening ends with an exciting ship-to-ship battle and fireworks.
Me Time: Spa
Reload, recharge and relax. Is there any better way to pamper yourself and forget about the daily hassles than at a nice spa? Bric Spa right off the 5th Avenue on 28th Street, about 10 walking minutes from Playa Palms Beach Hotel, offers a wide array of spa treatments and massages. They even go beyond the norm and also offer more specialized services such as Reiki healing sessions, deep tissue, trigger point therapy or biomagnetic therapy.
Our staff at Playa Palms Beach Hotel is happy to help you organize any of these activities, or tailor-make your itinerary with whatever adventures you and your family are looking for.

The world is big and when planning your next trip, many destinations may come to mind. Here are some excellent reasons beyond lush beaches and scenic ruins, why Playa del Carmen belongs on the top of your travel bucket list.
1 Ideally located
Playa del Carmen is only a 50 minutes drive from Cancun’s international airport and far enough down south to easily get to places like the ruins of Tulum and Cobá or Xcaret. The ferry to Cozumel is just a few minutes walk away and even Chichen Itza is a nice and affordable day trip.
2 Perfect mix of beach, culture, nature, and nightlife
The Riviera Maya has it all. Gorgeous beaches, magical cenotes to cool off on hot days, famous Mayan ruins, jungle, wildlife and parks like Xcaret or Xel-ha to spend unforgettable moments and a great nightlife. Observe all kind of animals on Contoy Island or in Sian Ka’an and feel the thrill at Xplor. At night, dance off your shoes on the famous 12th street in Playa del Carmen or just have a delicious drink at one of the many beach bars. In other words, there’s something for everybody!
3 Trendy, chill-out vibe
Both, Cancun and Playa del Carmen are popular with tourists, but Playa (as it’s called by locals) still maintained the heart and soul of a sleepy, bohemian beach town. It’s also quite cosmopolitan, and will not only make friends from all over the world, you can also eat your way around the globe. Apart from the typical Mexican food (which you should definitely try of course), you find everything, from Thai food to Italian cuisine or the Brazilian Steakhouse.
4 Easy to get around
Playa del Carmen is very easy to get around on foot. Especially when staying at Playa Palms Beach Hotel, you have literally everything within walking distance. The 5th Avenue is just 2 blocks away, with many restaurants, bar, nightlife, entertainment, shopping, and there are even Mayan ruins you can walk to.
We mentioned it before, but they deserve more attention: the incredibly gorgeous beaches around Playa del Carmen that bring you about as close to paradise as you can get. Check out our list of the Riviera Maya’s most beautiful beaches if you’re planning a day at the beach!
Unless you are a winter person, you will love the fact that only about 35 days of the year are below 25°C (80°F). If it rains, it’s usually “flash showers” that are replaced again by sunshine within an hour or so.
When thinking of Mexico, many people think of drug wars and violence. That might be true for some cities but not for Playa del Carmen. It’s not only easy to get around, it’s also safe. Especially compared to other tourist destinations or even where you might live.
