Looking for something unique to do while vacationing in Playa del Carmen? We recommend taking the ferry and spending a day on the island of Cozumel. In addition to fantastic dining and plenty of fun things to do, the north shore of Cozumel is home to the Cozumel Pearl Farm.
Celebrate One of the World’s Natural Treasures at The Cozumel Pearl Farm
Who isn’t fascinated by pearls? It’s absolutely amazing that a single grain of sand can yield one of life’s most valuable natural treasures – a pearl. The Cozumel Pearl Farm was started in order to study a very specific species of oyster, Pinctada radiata, also knows as the Caribbean Pearl Oyster.
The area where the oyster farm is located is a naturally protected beach, only accessible by boat. This has kept the environment around the farm in pristine condition. The farm is surrounded by the turquoise blue waters of the Caribbean sea on one side and dense mangrove lagoons on the other. They opened their doors as a center for eco-tourism in 2012 with the mission to teach people about the delicate habitat required for the survival and proliferation of the Caribbean Pearl Oyster. They use their grounds and the incredibly colorful pearls created by their oysters to serve as inspiration. Pearls take five years to cultivate and are available for purchase.
Visitors to the Cozumel Pearl Farm can enjoy a relaxing day on the beach, snorkeling along the untouched coastline, kayaking on the ocean or through the mangrove lagoons, or taking a walk on the shallow sand banks that meander through the property. Day passes also provide you with boat rides, tour guides, lunch, and beer and are only $110 for adults and $85 for children 6 – 12. Children under the age 6 can go for free.
Book your vacation at the Playa Palms Beach Hotel, and we’ll be happy to make your reservations for a day at the Cozumel Pearl Farm and to arrange transportation to and from the ferry. Contact us to make your reservation.
