Playa del Carmen can get pretty hot in summer, with temperatures around 90ºF / 32ºC and 85 percent humidity. But don’t worry, here are some cool ways to beat the heat and spend a wonderful summer vacation here in paradise.
Stay at Playa Palms Beach Hotel

Swim in a Cenote
The very best and coolest way to beat the heat in Playa del Carmen is to plunge in a cenote. A cenote is a natural sinkhole filled with fresh water, some subterranean and in caves or caverns. Besides the advantages of the cool water, you will definitely upgrade your summer vacation with an unforgettable experience. Read about the 5 best cenotes to visit >>
Make it a beach day
Of course, when spending your summer vacation Playa del Carmen you are looking forward to spending time at gorgeous beaches. Swimming in the calm Caribbean Sea and with the ocean breeze sure is an excellent way to stay fresh. Plus, you can work on your tan! These are the Riviera Maya’s most beautiful beaches >>
Spend the day at a beautiful inlet, surrounded by trees and hammocks. If there is a place in the Riviera Maya to spend a lazy day in nature on your summer vacation, this is it. Swim in the crystal clear water of the inlet, enjoy the view over the jungle and the turquoise Caribbean Sea from their viewing tower and get your adrenaline pumped by sliding down the waterslide. Or simply relax with a delicious drink in one of the many, many hammocks. Oh, and drinks and food are included! Ask to buy your entrance ticket and transportation at Playa Palms Beach Hotel’s front desk.
We all scream for ice cream!
What is summertime without ice cream? Forget the mundane vanilla and strawberry and try the exquisite flavors that the Museum of Fun & Ice Cream (10th Avenue with 10th Street) offers. Think champagne flavor for example. Also, they take the fun in their name seriously and offer fantastic desserts such as the Magical Unicorn Shake, a combination of a cupcake and a milkshake. For the Instagrammers amongst you travelers, their cute shop also offers some great photo opportunities.
You can’t possibly vacation in Mexico without having tried agua fresca! The beverage is perfect to hydrate and to cool off while strolling down the 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen. Aguas Frescas are made of your favorite fruit, or other natural ingredients such as cucumber or chia, mixed with water, sugar, and ice. The most common ones, which you should definitely try, are Agua de Jamaica (hibiscus flower) and Horchata (rice water). You can get them pretty much everywhere.
Another treat that beats the heat. Ceviche is made of seafood (typically shrimp, fish or octopus), cooked in lime juice. Thus, it makes for the perfect light dinner on hot summer nights. If you want to eat right at the beach, we recommend La Tarraya, on the beach with 2nd Street. They are one of the first restaurants to open in Playa del Carmen. So they sure know what they do! Another great place to eat Ceviche is Las Hijas de la Tostada (5th Avenue with 38th Street). They are famous for their delicious seafood tostadas. Every Friday from 9 pm to 11 pm, ladies can eat tostadas for half the prize.
