When traveling to Mexico you sure want to try the famous Mexican food – that has nothing to do with the Tex-Mex food that’s served in most places that dare to call themselves Mexican restaurants. Here are Playa Palms‘ favorite, most authentic Mexican restaurants in Playa del Carmen.
What is Mexican food?
Mexican food is so much more than just tacos and burritos! In fact, UNESCO designated the Mexican cuisine as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. So, if that doesn’t convince you to try real Mexican food, we don’t know what will.
This is by far our favorite Mexican restaurant in Playa del Carmen. They serve authentic food with a personal note from their famous chef. Plus, they make sure to use regional products. If you feel bold, you can even try exotic dishes like ant eggs and they have a wide array of Mezcals for you to drink (click here to learn about Mezcal and other typical Mexican beverages).
Where: 34th Street between the Avenues 5 and 10
At this funky place which seems to be the hipster’s favorite spot, they serve the best seafood in town. On weekends usually accompanied by electronic music from a live DJ. We added it to the list of Mexican restaurants in Playa del Carmen because of traditional plates like ceviche or aguachile. And because it’s a nice place with an authentic atmosphere to meet new people.
Where: 12th Street with 25th Avenue
3 El Fogón
You can’t talk about tacos in Playa del Carmen without mentioning El Fogón, the most famous place to eat tacos, burritos, and quesadillas, often accompanied by live music. If you go between 7 pm and 9 pm be prepared to wait in line.
Where: Constituyentes with 30th Avenue / 30th Avenue with 8th Street
4 El Ñero
Now, this restaurant is considered by locals to have the best tacos in town. They sell about 10 different types of tacos. We recommend you to try their tacos al pastor and suadero (flank steak of the cow). If you feel adventurous, go for “sesos” (brain) or “tripas” (intestine) which are apparently very delicious.
Where: Avenida Juarez between Avenues 40 and 45
5 La Perla Pixan Cuisine & Mezcal Store
If you want to eat like at your (fictional) Mexican grandma’s, you should try this eclectic Mexican restaurant in Playa del Carmen. Also, they serve several delicious drinks made of Mezcal and Pulque, the probably most typical Mexican alcoholic beverage. Pulque is a somewhat viscous beverage made by fermenting the fresh sap of certain types of Maguey. With that, their good food and the live bands often playing, it’s an excellent place to start your evening.
Where: 34th Street between Avenues 5 and 10
6 Rincón Yucateco
This little place makes you forget that you are in busy Playa del Carmen but you feel like you are somewhere in a sleepy town on the peninsula. They only open from 8 am to 5 pm, serving regional food with daily specials and attractive prices.
Where: Avenida CTM between 5th and 10th Avenue
