Over the last 20 years, Playa del Carmen has grown from a sleepy fishing village into a famous travel destination. Nowadays it’s mostly known for its gorgeous beaches and parties. But the city is so much more than just that. Here are 8 reasons, why travelers from all over the world love Playa del Carmen so much!
1 The Beach
Let’s start with the obvious. Playa del Carmen is a famous beach destination. What most people think of first, are its white sandy beaches and the turquoise colored ocean. Unlike Cancun, the beaches are easily accessible, what really makes it a beach town. Whatever kind of beach person you are, you will find the perfect one for you. There are beaches to party at, virgin beaches where you feel like you stranded on an island or beaches for sports activities. Read here our guide to the most beautiful beaches in and around Playa del Carmen.
2 The Weather
It’s usually sun worshippers that choose to spend their vacation in Playa del Carmen. Being blessed with about 300 sunny days a year, it sure is a perfect destination if you want to escape winter. Depending on where you live, the coldest days here are probably like a spring day where you are from. Still, keep in mind that in summer it might rain a bit more often and in winter nights are cooler.
3 The Streets
The fact that Playa del Carmen is easily walkable makes it a great destination for independent travelers. When you are staying downtown, like at Playa Palms Beach Hotel, you have everything within a short walking distance: restaurants, bars, nightlife, shopping, beaches, bus stations and the ferry to Cozumel. Especially the 5th Avenue is a fun street to walk along, with many attractions to see. Once you leave the 5th Avenue you will find many interesting shops too, and more economical restaurants. Keep your eyes open for mesmerizing murals!
4 The Vibe
Despite being the fastest growing city in Latin America, you can still feel that laidback “fishing village vibe”. Furthermore, Playa del Carmen has a rather European influence and, unlike Cancun, there are no high-rise buildings or huge hotel complexes in town.
5 The Activities
Playa del Carmen lies in the very heart of the Riviera Maya. This means that from here, many attractions are easier to get to than from Tulum or Cancun. You are closer to the famous parks Xcaret, Xel-Ha and Xplor, there are many cenotes surrounding Playa del Carmen, Cozumel is just a 40 minutes ferry ride, and it’s easy to organize a tour to any archaeological site too. 6 The Food
Forget Taco Bell and come try authentic Mexican food! Try some tacos (which are never served in a hard shell), cochinita pibíl (a typical dish from the Yucatan Peninsula) or marquesitas (a sweet treat sold by street vendors). And in the rare case that you get tired of Mexican food, Playa del Carmen offers a wide array of international cuisine too. From Italian restaurants to Asian cuisine or vegan food, you find about everything here. Read our Mexican food guide here and our restaurants guide here.
7 The Events
