We usually give you a lot of ideas about what to see and do during your Playa del Carmen vacation and in the Riviera Maya in general. But today, we are focused on what you should not do in Playa del Carmen. Never. Ever.
1 Don’t stay only on the 5th Avenue
The 5th Avenue is fun to walk along on your Playa del Carmen vacation. Especially if you call people watching a hobby. But with everybody trying to sell you something and lure you into their shops, it can also get very exhausting with the time. Bring out the adventurer in you and explore Playa del Carmen beyond the 5th Avenue! You will be surprised by the cute shops you find and delicious restaurants with WAY lower prices.
2 Don’t stay at a big all-inclusive resort on your Playa del Carmen vacation
Playa del Carmen is a safe and walkable place. It’s actually a lot of fun to explore the town walking! The many international restaurants, bars, its vibrant nightlife, marvel at the handmade jewelry from the street vendors, see the beautiful street-art or just stroll down the always busy 5th Avenue. Most of the big all-inclusive resorts are outside Playa del Carmen, and getting there means an expensive taxi ride every time (expensive because they charge more to get you to or from resorts). If you stay at a smaller hotel downtown (like Playa Palms Beach Hotel for example) you have the opportunity to really get to know Playa del Carmen. Also, you really upgrade your Playa del Carmen experience if you try out different restaurants instead of eating at the resort all the time.
3 Don’t wear high-heels
Dear ladies, we know, those stilettos look just perfect together with that black dress. But for your own sake, believe us when we tell you, Playa del Carmen’s streets are not made for high-heels. Do your ankles a favor and wear sandals, sneakers or just flip-flops. Also, Playa del Carmen is a really casual place where even in higher-end clubs you can get away without dressing up too much.
4 Don’t eat at the typical touristic Mexican restaurant
Yes, you definitely should try Mexican food. Especially the region’s specialties like Cochinita Pibil or Marquesitas (this snack, similar to crepes, is sold from little street carts). But please, avoid the tourist trap restaurants along the 5th Avenue that try very hard selling you the “real Mexican experience”. They usually have over-prized low-quality food. If you want to try authentic Mexican Cuisine, click here for Playa Palms’ recommendation on restaurants.
5 Don’t buy expensive tours on the 5th Avenue
Or at least, don’t buy with the first person that vigorously wants to sell you a tour. Ask other vendors too and compare prices! But if you are staying in a smaller hotel downtown, chances are that you get the same tour at a better price at your hotel. Our concierge at Playa Palms Beach Hotel ensures to sell you the best quality tours to fair prices. Just ask him upon arrival or message us.
Follow these simple advice and you will get the very best out of your Playa del Carmen vacation.
